Hi
My friend got hired on a farm here in Canada; he is from Jamaica. The liaison service that he had used before to go work in America is willing to help him but don't seem to know much about how to proceed to get his paperwork to get to Canada. He will be getting his police clearance, but she was unsure as to what type of medical he needs as the form seems to indicate it may be up to the immigration officer... also the only way of payment is by Bankdraft; we were wondering how to go about that, since the employer wanted to pay for the visa application fee. It seems so complex, although he has all his paperwork lined up, passport, lmo, contract etc... how do a poor immigrant can even get through it all, is beyond me.

any help from any experts, pls let me know!

Ok i will try to contact qorax, he has a job offer and all but we just want to make sure we apply for it correctly and if there are more than one methods, the best one. so far the Jamaican Liaison here in canada do not want to help the farm because the farm technically by passed them by hiring him directly, getting the LMO for him and a work contract. now the LMO will expire this May (2011) and the agent in Jamaica he knows, has experience with American immigration but none with Canada and isn't sure if he will need a medical or not, and the methods of payments for the farm (if credit card is accepted), she has all his original documents so that should help.

thanks!

This is in response to your PM...

Eligibility to apply a TWP [Temp. Work Permit] as you enter Canada

In your case - you don't necessarily require to apply for a TWP before hand. You can apply for a work permit as you enter Canada [@the A/port or POE], as you meet the following requirements:

•you are temporary resident visa exempt and
•your job does not need a labour market opinion from HRSDC (some exceptions apply) or
•you hold a labour market opinion from HRSDC.

Note:
If your job does need a labour market opinion, you can apply as you enter Canada as long as the positive opinion has been issued to you before you enter (except for live-in caregivers and seasonal agricultural workers).
-U already have this.

Jobs for which you need a medical examination
Depending on your intended occupation while in Canada, certain temporary foreign workers are required to undergo a medical examination. The following list provides examples of such occupations. This list is not all-inclusive.

1. Occupations that bring you into close contact (more than three hours a day or risk of exchange of body fluids) with people, namely:
◦workers in the health sciences field
◦clinical laboratory workers
◦patient attendants in nursing and geriatric homes
◦medical students admitted to Canada to attend university
◦medical electives and physicians on short-term locums
◦teachers of primary or secondary schools or other teachers of small children
◦domestics
◦workers who give in-home care to children, the elderly and the disabled
◦day nursery employees

2. Agricultural workers from designated countries or territories. -U r in this category

Note:
If you are uncertain about whether you need a medical examination, please contact the visa or immigration office where you are making, or have made, your application.

I do not believe Jamaica is exempt for needing a visa, they def. need a Visa to enter canada and as far as i know u need to apply for the work permit to get it.
the only problem is the person in jamaica don't read or write, so we have little help to find what documentation is needed other than the medical, what else is required? i've read the info on the gov site already, but couldn't find these answers. also jamaica is in the list of Exempt countries from medical for his type of work but somewhere else it said that if u stay more than 6 months, u need a medical, since the work is for 1 year i believe he may require it anyway, thats why i wanted to know, if medical is needed, which one would be required... is it required before he leaves, or can he take it while here in 6 months when due?

list of designated countries who need medical, and who don't here.. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/medical/dcl.asp

maybe he will have to wait until he goes at the immigration office and apply to find out?

1. Uh, as the TWP takes time - he can 'enter' Canada thru a TRV [Visit Visa] & obtain the TWP@A/port.
2. Yes, he needs the meds done prior to leaving thru a 'local' DMP.

the application for the work permit is somewhat a bit easier to fill in than the visitor visa one and for the same price ($150) the immigration officer said that will also give him his visa for entry in canada and the WP will already be in process. Where does it say the times, how do we know the WP takes a long time, he is someone that don't know how to read or write, i don't want him to have to fill out applications at the airport upon entry, so if applying for it ahead of time can help, he will do that... that don't mean the Imm. Office makes you wait for getting you the visa you need for entry. the agent over there said they apply for their work permit in Jamaica before coming in Canada, but she is only experienced with USA so maybe she's wrong. also a visitor visa form ask for certain things that ppl who apply for farm work don't have, first travel question instead of work ones, Bank accounts, money, pieces of property etc because they get the money and sponsorship from the farm. he don't have that much asset being very poor; i can't dunno how poor ppl get through. do you know why there is an application of Work Visa, instead of just the visitor one, (application is different) and why do they give an option for the work permit one also if it takes long (this is the package they seem to give agents out there)? that don't make no sense to me. on the medical; says on the cic site that the doctor needs to be chosen by the immigration office, not any local doctor can do it i guess. so will have to see what they say about that when he gets there. this is so complicated.

i just got back from talking to a friend who got through with the ministry of labour on a student permit... but she knows a few people who has been turned down even with job offers in hand for a visa, as the canadian high comm. in Jamaica turned them down due to a lack of jobs in jamaica they believe they won't come back to ja. it's very frustrating and strict for jamaicans right now....
