Can anyone confirm if I correct in saying that once my sponsorship goes through and I’m issued permanent residency, I can come and go from Canada for the first 3 years without affecting my PR?

I understand I would need to be present in Canada for 2 out of the 5 years, but I’m looking to finalise things at home and would rather not rush that process.

Also can anyone confirm the average length of time you get to first enter once issued a PR?

When you PR is approved, you will get a CoPR. This will have an expiry date by which you MUST land in Canada and declare PR. Your expiry date is likely to be 1 year from the date of your medical.

Once you have done this landing, yes, you can come and go from Canada as you please, but must be in Canada for 2 yrs out of 5 to retain your PR. Also a very good idea to get your PR Card before you start leaving Canada, or you wont be able to get on a plane back to Canada without either tge PR card or a PRTD (which is a pain to apply for)

Thank you very much. Do you know if they will send the PR card to me in the UK or do I collect it on first entry to Canada?

In principle they can go through on their own, to avoid issues it may be helpful for them to have a photcopy of your COPR/PR card just to show that the principal applicant has already 'landed.'

One question - that I don't know the answer to - is whether an adult (esp a parent) may be needed to sign on their behalf. You could try calling CBSA.

Note of course probably best if they have an adult travelling with them, although the 17 year old may be fine.

I landed in Canada yesterday alone, in immigration I asked them if my kids can enter alone, and they said yes, with all proper documents (ofcourse), I have to provide a document with my signature stating that I have already landed in Canada.
Just letting everyone know, if in case you are in a similar situation.
Thank you for your help.
