This forum is awesome....no judging.......there are all types of relationships here!!!! ;D
That's great to hear. I will definitely stick around and explore. Lots and lots of stuff to look at it seems! And ironic that I discover this forum just as my immigration experience is almost over. But then again, maybe I will be able to help other people navigate these treacherous waters haha!

Why is a Canadian/Cuban relationship judged?
As soon as you say you have or are marrying a Cuban they say to you......is he/she just looking for a visa.......communist country so as usual the bad ones make it worse for the good ones!!!!! You get a pretty thick skin pretty fast!!!!

Exactly...and there is a Havana, Cuba thread...and most of us there are just starting....some of us have had our file sent to Havana and others are still waiting for sponsor approval....and a few are just waiting for their significant other!!!

Oh and if someone could pleeeease take pity on my newbiness and help me figure out how to put all my stats under my profile name, that would be awesome! Unless because I'm new I don't have that privilege yet. I'm jealous of all your cool stats and avatars and animated immigration timeline icons!

You just need one more post and you'll be able to do all that. So....what is your favorite dessert?

Yes, it's nearly impossible to live in Cuba as a foreigner. Well unless you have a bunch of money and don't need to work...but even then, it would be hard. We looked at moving to Ecuador or Singapore...countries where Cubans don't need a visa. But that seemed like a pretty big adjustment for both of us just to be able to date ;) But all this will unfold on the blog...
That's so cool that you moved to the Dominican instead of the other way around. Maybe someday we'll spend a portion of the year in Cuba...depending on how politics towards foreigners living and working there change their over time.
Thank you again for the praise. I was nervous to post here, I guess I'm so used to people immediately judging a Cuban/Canadian relationship that I thought I might just get a lot of haters. Nice to have people be so nice instead!!
Yes, moved to DR after 1 1/2 years together. I did a 1 month placement at the school (in March 2009... I moved here in August 2009) I now just finished my 3rd year at teaching grade 5, as I was finishing up my teachers college degree at Queens University.... after my placement there they offered me a job and I took it, so for the past 3 years been living in DR.... we just got married last week on July 7th after almost 4 1/2 years together... I'm moving back to Canada on August 17th (wahhhhh!) and will submit the sponsorship papers and hopefully be able to get a teaching job, even if it's just supply work for now.... hoping we have a fast process. Wish I could stay in DR with him throughout the process but I figure I should get settled first and hopefully make a little money, rather than having 2 of us move in with my parents and be starting from scratch! I go now, hopefully get settled and get a job, and then that will make his adjustment easier (I hope!).

I've heard from a friend who has a friend who married a Cuban that she lived there and couldn't work. She also said that once a Cuban marries a foreigner that the Cuban can't work either. Is that true?? What about people that go to Cuba and teach at an English school? I assume there are rules around the no foreigner allowed to work, rule.... ?

Awesome! Here's the post that will take me to the next level of membership!!!!

That's probably a good plan about heading home first...but I bet you'll be kicking yourself after about a month missing him so much. Awwww! Don't worry, you'll make it!!!

The only work I know available for foreigners in Cuba is journalism (so not actually working for Cuba, just in Cuba for a foreign news agency) or at an embassy and a few tourism reps. I know there's a few exceptions of other foreigners working in Cuba but someone else would have to alert me to what they are. There aren't English teaching jobs like you have in most other countries. Because basically any job that you do is taking a job away from a Cuban...and that doesn't fly. And then if you did get a Cuban job you'd have to get Cuban wages...about $20-30 a month. Not many people could make that adjustment!

Once a Cuban gets married to a foreigner I believe they are supposed to quit. However, if they don't tell anyone they're married they can keep working. That's what my husband did because he didn't want to sit around doing nothing for a year. However, then it came back to bite us because it's taken us 4.5 months to get his liberation letter. If he'd quit earlier he could have had that letter prepared for when he got his Canadian visa and would have been here months ago. Sometimes you can get the liberation letter in a day, sometimes it takes 5 years, sometimes you never get it (if you're in a high-level job or some sort of dissident they don't like to release you). It is pretty frustrating...but worth it!

Crazy they need permission to leave! I hope he gets it soon!

I remember when I was in teachers college they had an international teaching panel and had a bunch of international school representatives from around the world and there was a Cuban guy there trying to get people to want to teach in Cuba. He mentioned that wages were low, but I didn't realize they were that low! I thought I had it bad in DR working as a teaching making $500/ month!

It is crazy! He loves his country but this process is making him recognize his lack of rights and freedoms which is pretty depressing for him. He understood theoretically before...but now he actually understands he's not free.

The whole process basically feels as childish and patronizing as this: I ask my strict parents (Canada) if my friend can come over to our house for a sleepover. They say first I have to finish a lot of homework and do all my chores and then tell them all about him, his family, his background etc so they know who is sleeping under their roof. Finally I get it all done and they agree to let him come over. So then he asks his parents (Cuba) if he can go play at my house...and they say 'Noooooo, you are grounded, you can't go anywhere until you prove how sorry you are for wanting to leave us!!!'

Oh immigration, what a way to make people feel like children whose fates are completely in the hands of others eh?

Ya well I get that, being married to an undocumented Mexican in the US! LOL! The stigma can get pretty nasty but they don't understand what people go through. And I don't care, I love him - my college sweetheart. He didn't tell me for a couple of years because he was worried I'd never want him. But I do not care about stuff like that, he is an amazing person.

Wow, yeah, from what I know (which is basically just TV and Hollywood movies) being an undocumented Mexican in the US is not easy at all!! So did you get married there and are now sponsoring him to Canada? Does that mean you have to be in Canada while he waits in the States or can he come and wait it out in Canada? I am so in my Cuba immigration bubble...just realized I have no idea how it works for everyone else

Just took a look at your blog, veradis... it is awesome! What an interesting way to log your journey.

My favourite anecdote on there is the orange sequin-ed NON-IRONIC shirt! Too funny....

Hopefully Cuba is a place I will visit one day. A few of my Canadian partner's friends have gotten married there recently - and it looks amazing.

Thanks for checking it out and yeah, that orange shirt is WEIRD! Cuba really is an amazing place. I'm irritated it at the moment because it's holding my husband hostage...but will come to appreciate it again for sure!

Keep the posts coming, Veradis! Can't wait to find out how the return trip went! I remember my first trip returning to DR to visit my now husband and I couldn't eat anything and felt like I was going to throw up, I was so excited and nervous!! and then that first giant hug.... BLISS!
