Note: I'm asking this on behalf of my friend.

My friend recently got married to her long time boyfriend. She is PR in Canada, he is in Dubai. Now, she is completing all the documents needed to sponsor him. Some of the proofs that she will use are "screenshots" of their Facebook conversation/post to prove that they know each other long time ago. They are communicating mainly in FB since they are in a long distance relationship. They have very few post mails and photos (been together physically for less than 6months).

Now, this is her concerns:

1. Both of them are not using their REAL names on FB, how can they prove that they own the account?
2. Will they consider this as a valid proof that they have really met years ago even before she was granted her PR?

Thanks a lot!

I don't think so FB will help. It's hard to prove the authenticity of relationship from FB.

I sent some conversations. Copied to word and printed some.
Also I sent chat history from whatsapp and some screenshots from Skype video chats.

This is exactly what they wanted to do but since they're not using real names on their FB/SKYPE account, how can they prove that it is their account?

They are REAL couple but since they are away from each other, they are using social networks site/apps to communicate with one another (just like email).

You can change to your real names just to take the ckversatiins.
On my whatsapp our names are not our real names since we use aliases.
So I putted some conversations with an observation: my name on cellphone is xxxxx and my wife's name on my contacts are XXXXX.

I only took screenshots of my wedding photos, or any other photo of the two of us and people's likes/comments so that it shows our relationship is known to friends and relatives.

there are many people who get approved no problem with using fb or other proof from social media. it certainly is an accepted way to show the validity and timeline of a relationship, as well as shows the relationship is known to family/friends. cic is going to use ALL the information provided to make decisions. it isn't just about 1 form of proof, it's about the entire package.

Yes absolutely. And as to the "screen-names" being different from their actual names, this is more common than not - especially with all the various social medias that are in use today, and concerning privacy issues with regard real names being broadcast... CIC knows this, and I've not seen any issues come up - including our case and interview. So my conclusion is that they should not be concerned about the names, especially if making a note of Who is "who" is the various conversations..

Why don't they change their names on FB? Change their names to their real names, take screenshots of all the things they need, then they can change it back to what it was. (You can only change it a certain number of times, but I think that number is 5.)

I'm lining up a lot of FB posts referencing us moving to Canada, because I know the VO's will come back and ask us for more intent to reside proof.

Keep in mind that if you change your fb names to your real ones to get the screenshots, fb won't allow you to change it again for 60 days. I don't think you need to though. Your word that it is you guys should be enough. I use my maiden name on my fb instead of my legal name (with ex-husband's surname) and I still sent in a ton of fb screenshots and chats.

How do you get the screenshots? Do you copy and paste, and then how do you get it on paper to send in? Same question for video of skype? My husband and I skype video every night and sometimes I take pics of the video screen with my cell phone.

Like the others have said about screen names it does not really matter if you are using an alias instead of your actual names.

However for reference for those who feel inclined to have their real names on the log files...

Use a good word processor program such as open office or similar... Open the log file with it.
The find and replace function can be used to change the whole log file. Example in the Find box.. type ME
then in the Replace with box type YOU. The word processor will find every instance of the word ME and change it to YOU. After all your changes are completed use save as and give it a new name so you don't lose the original file before edits were done.

Hope that helps some of you.

Chris

I can tell you how to do a screenshot or a screen grab on a Mac, but not Windows. To get a shot of the whole screen you hit "command" "shift" and 3. If you want to select what you want to get a shot of from the screen, which is what I do, you hit "command" "shift" and 4 and then you create a box around what you want a shot of.

I have a wireless printer, so I just send the screen grabs to the printer to print.
