I got my COPR on 23rd october 2019 and on 29th October 2019 I received my PR card as well. Hence accorrding to this information, my PR card should have expired on October 29 2024 (in 10 days)

I lost my PR card in 2023 and received a new PR card (appplied for new one with police complaint) in July 2023, and on the card it says expiry of the PR card is July 2028 (5 years from issue of new PR card)

I HAVE NOT APPLIED FOR CANADIAN citizenship yet.
MY QUESTION IS - According to old PR card (which I lost) , my PR should expire in 10 days - Does it mean i need to mandatorily apply for Canadian citizenship (provided i meet the residency requirements) (or apply for renewal of PR card) before 29th October 2024?

Or does it mean that - Since I received new PR CARD with new dates and it expires - I have until 2028 to decide and apply for Canadian citizenship /or PR card renewal?

Please this is troubling me, any experienced member who is really sure of the answer if any one can help me with this question please help me asap..I fee nervous!

Thank you!

PR status does not 'expire'. Only PR cards expire. Your previous (lost) PR card's date of expiry is no longer relevant in any way whatsoever; the date of expiry of your new card has only one meaning, it is the date of expiry of the PR card.

Going forward, your PR status can only be lost by being revoked or renounced - and by far the most common way that PR status is 'lost' is by the PR acquiring citizenship. (Of necessity you lose PR status when you become a citizen - although I admit it does sound weird to call this revocation, I don't know another term for it in this context)

You are never required to apply for citizenship. You apply if you wish to become a citizen. You don't technically even 'need' to renew your PR card, although it's advisable to (among other things, travel abroad and returning becomes much more complicated without one). For a PR living in Canada, the PR card is not generally required on a day to day basis - it's not like a driver's license, required for drivers to have a current one and to carry it when they drive.

Note that unlike what many think: the residency obligation requirement is a continuous one and is not directly related to the PR card's validity. It is an ongoing requirement. While you don't lose PR status automatically, it can be revoked 'for cause' - criminality, not complying with the residency obligation, etc. (Both separate topics with lots of details - emphasize again, revocation is not automatic)

The only difference on a time basis is that after the fifth anniversary of the date you became a PR (i.e. 23rd October 2024 in your case), you start counting days abroad/in Canada for the five year period looking back five years from any day - most importantly, any day you are 'examined', typically at a port of entry, but also days you apply for something (PR card renewal, citizenship).

If you meet the physical presence days to apply for your citizenship, then you can apply. The PR card is just for traveling back to Canada. So the expiry date of a previous PR card DOES NOT matter.

Use the calculator to find out if you can apply for citizenship (days before becoming PR counts (as half days) too if you were inside Canada before you became PR as a temporary resident.
So do you math. And make sure you meet other requirements (language etc)
