Hi guys,

Would it be beneficial to apply to extend a visitor visa before or after we are married??
(US citizen marrying Canadian in Canada)
Everything is so touchy, just looking to see what the best option is.

As soon as we are married we will be sending in our spousal sponsorship, but not sure if we should apply to extend his visa that expires in a month and a half now or later??

Thanks

What would be the purpose of the extension?

Hi

Note that you are extending visitor status, not a visitor visa.

It doesn't matter if you apply before or after the marriage. Apply around 30 days before status expiry. Explain that you are applying for sponsorship and include a copy of the PR fee receipt.

Thanks guys.
Jalex, the purpose of the extension is to allow him to stay in Canada with me.. He's been back and forth for nearly six months and want him to stay here during the sponsorship process.
Just trying to get as much info through this trying time!

Then it seems your purpose is for him to LIVE with you, not just visit.... that will make it difficult to get an extension.

Wrong. CIC has no issue granting such extensions provided a person shows sufficient proof of funds.

Wrong. CIC has refused several extensions due to the fact that it seems like a non-legit visit regardless of funds.

Read the experiences of everyone on this forum in the same situation. With a PR app in process, there is virtually no chance of refusal. If you don't know what you are talking about, don't comment. And seriously, stop begging for positive votes in your signature; you will always have more negative votes because you provide bad advice such as this.

OP, ignore this poster. You will have no issue extending his status on the basis that he is staying with you during the PR process. Proof of funds and proof of the PR app and you are good to go.
