Soooo we just finished our family sponsorship process.. got COPR and landed. It states that is valid for 10 years. As one would expect, 10 years isn't exactly "permanent"...

how do we go about extending this should we choose not to get citizenship?

Thanks!

There is no "extending" PR. You have PR now, and you will continue to be a PR as long as you live within Canada for at least 2 years out of any given five year period. Time spent living outside of Canada with a Canadian citizen spouse counts as time within Canada, as well. PR can be revoked if you don't meet the residency requirements. The only thing that expires is the PR card.

I wonder why it says expiry date on my COPR then? weird. this must be referring to the card, which a new one is issued near expiration date?

Thanks

probably means you can only use your actual COPR for entry purposes for 10 years? My guess is it's assumed by then, either you won't be a pr anymore, or your will have a valid PR card to use. once the pr card comes, the copr piece of paper basically stays in a file and needs to only be used to prove date of entry for citizenship and old age pension. it's not something that will need to stay in your passport if you really do stay here "permanently".

The date on your CORP has nothing to do with your PR card. The date on your CORP is the date by which you must "land" in Canada in order to become a PR.

I wonder if the expiry date on the COPR is wrong, such as writing 2025 instead of 2015? Sometimes the writing is not very clear. Or, possibly, this is a simple typo.

No they don't just issue you a new PR card. You must apply to renew your card. You don't have to renew it before it expires so long as you remain in Canada. This is when your residency obligation is evaluated. As part of the application you will scan and include every page of your passport(s) to prove your exit and re-entry dates to support your number of days of residence in Canada. We're expecting to do include pages from my passport as well (I'm the sponsor), since as noted previously time spent with a Canadian citizen spouse outside Canada still counts for PR (not for citizenship). We're already keeping track of these in a simple spreadsheet.

It is "permanent". As long as you really live here, you shouldn't have any trouble renewing.
