Wondering if anyone has tried extending study permit in Canada. I'm a fourth year Phd student and my current permit expires this September. My uni gives me 8 years to finish but because my passport expires in Sept 2017, I was given study visa till sept 2017.

I have two kids (born while doing my phd :p :p ). Does anyone know how much I 'll need in my bank statement to make my application. Also, is it okay to apply now given it expires in Sept

First, renew your passport. Depending on your home country it can take anywhere between 3 weeks to 3 months, may be more! Do not plan international travel in that time.
Next extend your study permit. I have done that, multiple times. Super smooth process. Do not worry about it.
If you do not get your new passport and at least apply for your new study permit based on that before Sept 2017, YOU SHOULD LEAVE THE COUNTRY by the last date mentioned in your current study permit. Don't make a mistake in that.
Assuming your spouse is living with you as dependent, you need to show a total of 10000+4000+3000+3000= 20000 CAD in your account for the whole family.
Applying for study permit extension does not need to be any earlier than 90 days. Even one day is fine; you will be on "implied status" till you receive new study permit only after you apply for it. But I would not recommend that.

Good Luck!

Thanks good boy!

Yes, I have renewed my passport.

I was wondering about proof for the 20k as it is seemingly impossible to get that.

I have a TA which amounts to 18k per year but we have to reapply every semester - I have been lucky to be getting every semester for over 3 years. I do get up to 5,000 from the university in form of bursary every semester and I have paid my tuition for this semester. My spouse is also working.

Do you think those are enough (or I still need to show 20k in account)?

Thanks so much!

Let's see the situation from VO's point of view. S/he wants to make sure you have enough for the whole family; for your case the amount is 20K. Plus your tuition fees for 1 year(say $x). So in order to get your study permit, you need to prove that you have 20K+x. If you have a stable income from the University shown in your pay stub, that definitely counts. That includes the bursary as well. Now, pay stub + bursary+ your bank account balance+ tution fees payment receipt should be well over 20K +x. If you are less than that, you stand zero chance. If you are just over that, you still stand a slim chance as you earn by TA and that is not as secured as scholarship or bank balance. So you have to be well over 20K +x to make your case. In my understanding, 25K+x would be a decent number for you.

It also depends on your location. Somebody from NL has far better chance than someone from Ontario, latter is too crowded. Also, I know people applied after their study permit expired, produced wrong documents and still got it extended with no trouble!

You're responding to a post from 2017. The answer is going to be irrelevant to your situation since that's pre-COVID and processing times have been impacted by the pandemic.
