extending study permit as a part-time student

Hi, All

I am currently living in BC and I'm with a study and work permits.

I want to take a program at a different school as a part-time student. But as
a part-time student it will take me longer to finish my program, beyond the validity of my
study permit. I need to be a part-time student because now I can't afford to be a full-time student.

Can I extend my study permit if I become in a part-time student?

The study permit has certain rules that you need to follow; attending a school full time is one of them. There may be reasons where you may not have a full course load for a semester or even skip a semester but you will have to explain that when extending your stay and it has to be a valid genuine reason (such as unavailability of courses during a particular semester).

Not having enough funds means you void the conditions of your study permit and they will cancel your permits.

The reason is that I want to know what officially means full-time. Could it be a certain number of subjects per semester?
how about 2 subjects?

"If approved for a work permit, students will be entitled to work up to 20 hours a week during the regular academic year, as long as they are registered as full-time students"
so if u become a parttime student u will be violating ur eligibility criteria and may lose ur work permit.


full time student means ur college/university should consider u a full time student...
"Each institution identifies the course load required for a student to be considered full-time in a specific program of study."

Normally, the description of full time varies by each institution.

2 subjects is most definitely part-time.

What's your current status, how much study you have already covered? Though I am not an expert on this particular issue, but then I reviewed a similar live case where student completed 4 semesters and wanted to continue with rest as part time and he was given approval by the college and had no issue from CIC (as far as I can recall). But you must do your research, why don't you give CIC a call and figure it out? They aren't difficult to reach over the phone and they are the perfect source of info for you or perhaps even college rep at International Services Center can also give you a better insight on this.

Rest lets wait what others may contribute on this issue.

Might be acceptable in cases where the required courses are not being offered in the current semester or only a handful of courses are left for degree completion (as is the case in universities where you pick your courses). In the end, it probably has to be justified by a valid reason. Not being able to afford it puts his status at risk as that was a condition when he was granted a student visa.

I will explain my situation a bit more.

I am a chilean citizen so I can apply for a work permit under CCFTA ( for more details please type up 'chile canada work permit under CCFTA', the forum doesnt allow me to post links)

I am currently living in Vancouver, working for a company ( startup ) that is willing to sponsor me under this work permit.

The problem is that I didn't finish school and I don't have the necessary qualifications, so for now I think it might be best
to finish my studies so I can get the minimum qualifications required so I can apply for the work permit under CCFTA.

I want to spend more time working for the company so I'd like to study parttime. My study permit will expire soon so I'll have to look for
a new school and register so that I can renew my study permit.

Is there a better ( more economical ) way to get the work permit under CCFTA??

I basically need more time and money so I can keep working for my company.

Last but not least, I have a pile of experience and knowledge, but because I dropped out of school I don't have qualifications that prove that
I am competent in my professional field ( web development - computer programming ). Does anyone out there know a way
where I can get official recognition without my going back to school again? ( I'm in my late 20's and cannot afford to go back to college for the time being, both in terms of time and money ).
