This for in land spouse sponsorship ..
Applied for PR May 2015 and at the same time applied for an extension to stay in Canada.
Received extension to stay in Canada for 1 year, from June 2015 to June 2016.
Then in September 2015 received Work permit, which expires in 2018.
PR application is still obviously in process..
Question: Given that work permit is valid until 2018, do we need to apply for extension to stay in Canada again ?

Thanks

work permit is the legal document you need to remain in Canada legally I believe.

hey, just want to ask a question, so youre spouse right now is only a tourist and youre sponsoring him/her while he/she is in canada?

No, there is no need to apply for a visitor extension; s/he has status until 2018.

She had tourist visa when we filed for PR. Then she received open work permit, so I believe it's not considered tourist anymore.
But long answer short, yes
