Hi There

I am a female from the Uk and met my Canadian boyfriend whilst traveling round Australia last year. I came to Canada with him 4 months ago on a visitor visa and we now live with his parents.

I want to extend my visa so that we can look into becoming common law partners.

I have a few questions:

What would be the best thing to write for my reason for comming to Canada?

I came to visit his family, explore our relationship further and to persue becomming a common law partner?

Also how long can i extend it for? Can i ask for more than 6 months?

And finaly, although unfortuately i have no funds as such of my own, his parents he have agreed to support me whilst im here.
Would this be enough information for them or do i have to provide the household earnings etc....???

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated :)

Tell the truth, which in this case it is also a valid reason to extend your visa.

You can extend it for 6months. You can ask for more than 6months, odds are you won't get it. You can reply under the same reason every 6months.

And finaly, although unfortuately i have no funds as such of my own, his parents he have agreed to support me whilst im here.

You do not need to provide proof of fund if your boyfriend and/or his parents are willing to support you.

It does make sense to allow you a year in order to establish your common-law relationship prior your impending application under one of the family class.

Well, I was married at the time. :) I have no idea why they did that. I got a work permit right after anyway, so it made no difference to me.

Yeah there was a previous post before where the reason for extending stay was exploring relationship and it worked. Might work for you too. But don't request more than 6 months. Just apply for another extension again later should you be given one this time.

A continous twelve months "exploring" relationship was a prior requirement before you may apply for Permanent Residency under the family class of "common-law partner" provided you got a qualified sponsor.".

The post was not for PR under common law but for extension of visitor visa.

Here's the post:

As to proof of funds, submit a statement of undertaking from the parents together with your extension application.

When I applied to extend my visitor status my explanation was that I wanted to spend more time with my wife. As proof of funds I sent an employment verification letter from her employer. I asked for 6 months.

This was approved without a hitch and I was given 1 year.

Since you were entitled to the Visa Waiver Program as an Australia passport-holder you do not need a visa to enter either Canada or the U.S.; however, you should apply for an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) online free of charge for at least three days ahead of your intended entry to the U.S. All you need is an Authorization Number you acquire online.

I have a few questions:

What would be the best thing to write for my reason for comming to Canada?

Hi Karlshammar

You are in a different situation. Though both of you were from "visa free countries" [read sometime ago you don't need visa to enter Canada/US(?))], she's not married and there was no mention if the boyfriend is working. Well let us just hope for the best for sadieiv, and yes it would really be great if she can be given 1 year extension too.

However, you do need to apply online, free, an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) at least three days before you wish to enter the U.S. You may stay as a traveller in either country for as long as six months unless the Custom or Immigration Officer at the border put a limtation on your passport.
