Hello All,

My husband and I want to extend his current multiple re-entry visa which he has used once to stay for 3 weeks.
The current visa expires on May 17, 2010 and we are both abroad at the moment.

Can we come to Canada and apply online even though there are less than 30 days until expiry?

Will he have implied status after the visa expires?

Is it possible for him to travel out of Canada and return on the extension or will he have to remain in Canada while it is being processed?

Thank you!

It is expired. If you mean it will expire on May 17, 2011, then yes he can still use the visa. Depends upon the POE officer how long a stay he'll be given. You can not extend the visa in Canada but you can apply to extend the visit if allowed entry in Canada by sending a request to extend stay before the expiration of the allowed stay. The visa has to be applied for outside Canada.

May 17, 2011 - Sorry for the confusion. It is still valid for another 3+ weeks.

According to the cic.gc.ca website it states that a temporary resident visa must be extended from inside Canada.

I don't see any information about applying for an extension from outside Canada.

A visitor record can be extended within Canada, a temporary resident visa has to be done outside Canada.

Job_seeker, you are very helpful.

I followed your links. The second one led me to a Visitor Self Assessment Tool.

Which stated that, "You cannot apply to change conditions or extend your status as a visitor from outside of Canada."

I am new to all of this so I must not be understanding correctly the difference between extending visiting record and TRV.

I would be really appreciative if you could clarify. :)

TRV - visa pasted on the passport; can either be single entry or multiple entry. Obtained from a consulate/visa office outside Canada.
Visitor Record (VR) is a piece of security paper or stamp on passport (obtained upon arrival to Canada) specifies when you arrived in Canada and up to what time you're allowed to stay. VR is also given to you if your request for an extension of stay is allowed. Applied for if you are in Canada and wishes to extend your stay; sent to CPC-Vegreville.

In essence, we cannot extend the visa but we can apply to extend the visit, right?
And in order to extend the visit, he must be in Canada, right?

Going back to the initial post...
Will he have to remain in Canada while it is being processed? (about 50 days or so, right)

Yes, he loses implied status if he leaves Canada (except if he's going only to the US or St Pierre et Miquelon)
