Hi everyone,

Really trying to find a way for my boyfriend to be able to work when visiting me in Canada for 6-12 months. After a lot of digging, I found out that he could potentially extend his stay from the 6 months visitors visa (he's from the Netherlands) to 12 months. I also found out, as per Guide 5553 that it may be possible to change the conditions of your stay (to be able to work) - This is what the guide states (I put his particular eligibility in bold)

"Normally, a work permit must be applied for prior to coming to Canada. Only in a few special circumstances presented in this guide can an initial work permit be applied for within Canada:

you presently hold a valid study or work permit;
you are the spouse of a study or work permit holder;
you were previously authorized to work without a permit;
you presently hold a valid Temporary Resident Permit;
you are a refugee claimant or an applicant for permanent residence in Canada under section 207 of the IRPR, or
you are a trader or investor, intra-company transferee or professional under NAFTA."

Am I completely wrong for thinking this might be a possibility? Any advice super welcome!

It's a no - unfortunately you've misunderstood the rule. He won't have a TRP - he will have a TRV. If this was an option it would have been recommended to you earlier by someone on this forum.

A TRP is a special class of visitor visa that is different than a TRV (TRV is a regular visitor visa). A TRP is for people who are inadmissible to Canada (typically due to a crime). To be approved, they need to demonstrate they have a strong need to be in Canada (e.g. terminal illness of an immediate family member) and that their need to visit Canada outweighs the risks of allowing them to enter Canada.

Your boyfriend doesn't qualify for a TRP and therefore doesn't fall under this rule.

All of your available options were provided to you earlier.
