Can someone shed some light on my situation.

So a friend just applied through Express entry, as I will be doing over the next few weeks. They said that they weren't asked to do WES. They have asked there lawyer and they said this is due to the fact that they already have a degree in Canada as well as a degree in their home country. So when their study permit was done, the university had already assessed their degree in their home country.

Has anyone heard of this before? I was thinking I would have to do WES, but I know my university assessed my UK degree when I came to Canada, so not sure if WES will be required?

It depends on what degree you did in Canada. If you did your Masters in Canada, then there is no need to assess your first degree, because the points you are awarded for Education is higher at the Masters level.

Hi jpfyoung....as per WES wesbsite, please see the extracts:

Clear, legible photocopies of all degree certificates issued by the institutions attended
e.g. Bachelor, Master, Postgraduate Diploma, Ph.D.

The above information does highlight that, if you want to claim point on basis of education then you need to get your degrees' validated.

Thus, in my opinion in order to get more clarity you can contact WES @ Telephone: (+1) 416-972-0070

Hi,

Thankyou for your replies.

I just found this extract on the CIC website: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/assessment.asp

Seems to indicate that you have to get it done if you want the points. You are correct that they have a masters degree, so that will probably be the reason.

The first statement says "If you have a Canadian degree, diploma or certificate, you do not need to get an ECA."

But then, it pretty much goes on to say that this isn't the case if your applying through express entry and want the points..
