So I just got my post grad work permit and I have got a job but its neither part time or full time - Im a relief worker (called upon when needed). However, some weeks I work part time hours and other weeks I work full time hours. Will my hours be counted towards the 1560 hours needed for one year in Canadian Experience Class? Or do I have to be FULL TIME or PART TIME (relief hours foesn't count?)
In response to the questions you sent me by PM -
Regardless of whether your employer considers you full or part time, IRCC's definition is what counts. If you work "30 or more hours per week," it is a "full-time week;" less than 30 is part-time. IRCC's example of 15 hours per week is half the full time hours, therefore it will take twice as long to attain the FTE of 1 year, but that is just an example with 15 hours per week; the time it takes of course depends on the # of hours worked.
But note You cannot "count" the hours worked beyond 30 to "speed up" the accumulation of hours. Doesn't matter if it is 30 hours, 40 hours, 80 hours per week - is just one full-time week, or the FTE of 30 hours. For example, if you worked 60 hours per week, you do not qualify in 6 months - you still have to work a full year.
If you have variable hours, then you need very good records of the hours worked for each week. You are wise to ask in the beginning, because it is easier for you to track from the beginning. Make yourself a spreadsheet, and keep all of your paystubs.
You can calculate your FTE in one of two ways -
Option 1 - First, count your full time weeks. Then, for your part-time weeks, add up the hours and divide by 30. Add your FT weeks + FTE weeks. When you have 52 weeks, you have met the 1 year requirement.
Option 2 - In your spread sheet, make 2 columns. First column has the actual # of hours worked per week. 2nd column - FTE eligible hours - for any week that has more than 30 hours, change the number to 30 (you can count a maximum of 30 hours per week). Then add all the FTE hours, divide by 30, and you have your FTE # of weeks. Again, 52 weeks = 1 year.
Because you have variable hours, you should include a letter of explanation with your application - the letter should include your spreadsheet table / calculations. You will also want to provide paystubs and/or your record of employment as documentary evidence.
The goal is to make it as easy as possible for the VO to say "yes."
