Hi guys,

Need your expert advice

Given that I wanted to apply for PR, I sought advise from british council as to what typeof ielts exàm I should do and it was told that IELTS academic is the best and so I did.

Upon creating my EE profile, the box for exam states that only IELTS general is accepted. :( :(

So, it is okay to check ielts general in that box and fill in results for academic. This is because academic results can be used for both as per british council. Or would this cause a serious breach of ethics or something?

Also, suppose you fill out a detail in the EE profile wrongly (not intentionally) or you thought thats the right choice and it turns out tht you were wrong. What are the effects? Do you get kicked off?

I'll really appreciate your help as the ietls box has made me pause the completion of the profile :(

Thanks a tonne for any help.

its IELTS GENERAL that is required by IRCC, not Academic. Dont enter the information of your Academic one.

Please redo the exam, but this time make sure you apply for GENERAL IELTS.

Thanks

Your app will be rejected if you use Academic results. British Council shouldn't give any advices on Canadian immigration.

General is used for immigration and work purposes while academic is used for educational purposes. For EE, CIC clearly mentions that they need general and not academic. If you put in your academic scores now and get ITA, you have to upload the test report form and the test report form will mention it as academic. This will lead to refusal and potential inadmissibility. Don't risk it. Just take the test again.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies,

Its really appalling to hear that - i even have emails from british council (BC) explicitly stating that IETLS Academic is acceptable. I initially had the doubt whether IRCC requires general or academic and thats when i emailed BC to firm up a response.

Are you aware of any alternatives? - someone with a heroic story of getting in with IETLS academic? - can writing to IRCC explaining this and accompanying the results better the situation? - i mean at the end of the day, if someone does academic and gets 8.5. does it really question the language ability of that individual had he done it with General?

IRCC has nothing to do with the advise that BC gave you. You could have either checked IRCC website or asked on the forum before booking the test. The speaking and listening modules are the same for academic and general. The reading and writing modules are different. For the academic reading module, you read graphs, charts and answer questions relating to those. For general reading, you have to read general passages and answer questions. For the academic writing task 1, you have to interpret graphs, maps, charts, etc. For the general writing task 1, you have to write a letter. Those are the differences between the 2. IRCC is very strict about language scores. It's easier to retake the test than to risk a rejection.

your PR application will immediately get rejected if you'll enter IELTS academic results.. So stay away from it. CIC website clearly says GENERAL is required for immigration.. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/language-testing.asp

Trust me, I've heard people saying that IELTS academic is tougher than IELTS General. So appear for General and you'll crack good score..

So, sorry about that, but - lesson learned - if you have a question about what IRCC accepts, ask IRCC, not a third party.

Are you aware of any alternatives? -
The only alternative is to take the CELPIP instead of the IELTS general (if you live in Canada).

If you want to be angry with someone, be angry with BC, and let them know if their error. Perhaps they will be able to do something for you, but I wouldn't count on it.

The IETLS Academic is for Australia whilst General is for Canada. Hence why the British council got mixed up.

There isnt much difference between Academic and General. So if you have practised the Academic you should be good to for the General paper.

Hi all,

Really appreciate all your comments on this post.

Lesson learnt - seek advise from this forum before taking costly steps.

As much as its easy to do General, I might not go for it reasons being my busy schedule and my CRS points with 8.5 ielts academic put me at 448 which is below the cut off for ONIP so I shall jot it down for future.

Can I pick your brains on this alternative?

I work for a big 4 currently so I can get an offer/job in the same company in canada. I guess I can do away with the LMIA stating that its an intercompany tranfer and work a temp work permit while I put in a PR request from canada.

I hope they do not ask people already in canada (and who work there) for an English profiency test.can

Can this work. Let me know your opinions.
Thanks

The LMIA job will give you points but you will still need to retake IELTS for the PR.

You still need IELTS GENERAL test scores even if you are applying from within Canada.

You need to do your research properly before posting on here. . The ITA cut-off for the last draw was 447, so you would have been through even without ONIP.

Whether you work in Canada or whether you are a native speaker you still have to do the IETLS General.
