Hello everyone,

I applied for an extension for my work permit, which is a bridging open work permit, a few months before it expires. But since they are now processing everything 3 times longer, I am expecting to receive the extension after my work permit expires.

There will be a gap where I lose my status in Canada. What will happen during that gap? I have been working in a same company for 3 years. What will happen with my employment?

Thank you,

You will need to provide your employer with the receipt/acceptance of your BOWP application. You will be on implied status while you wait for your next permit.

Details here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/tools/temp/visa/validity/implied.asp

You can still legally work, you just can't leave Canada or you will lose implied status.

You're on "implied status" until you receive your new WP. As for what would happen to your employment, likely no change will happen, but you really should follow up with your HR department if your company is large enough to have one.

My company is the size of 100 to 500 people and the HR said they accept implied status until a (positive) decision is made on WP, this is what most of the employers should accept. However I heard some companies even some profitable and large ones are being unreasonable and uncooperative; their foreign workers receive emails reminding them about WP from their HR 2-3 months prior to work permit expiry. They don't accept implied status with the ground of "it is uncertain of what decision will be made" and disallow foreign workers to continue work on implied status coz they are dodging the slightly possibility of a foreign worker might have been refused WP while on implied status. These should be the minority of employers.

Your HR should have known that your current work permit is going to expire and they may contact you soon before that. You may choose to follow up with them instead but if I were on the same boat I would just keep working and send them an updated WP when I receive it. It is legal to work on implied status.

The only problem with implied status is that for example in Ontario you can't renew your health card / have OHIP coverage until your new BOWP arrives - you will have to pay your medical expenses out of your pocket and get a refund when your WP gets approved.

Alberta will give you a 3 months extension after your permit expiry, which is great. I was on implied status last year and this was lucky because I broke my foot!

Yes, you can. Just go to cic and apply for a work permit extension. It will be another bridging work permit, which is exactly the topic of this thread.

Just make sure to do it as soon as you read this message because if you are in Canada, the current processing time is 4 months.. :)

The email (e-receipt of APR) is not the Acknowledgement of Receipt required for a BOWP.

See the section on "Express Entry" on this page -
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/tools/temp/work/prov/bridging.asp

Not saying it won't work if you apply now, but it is a gamble... You have 3 months, you could wait a bit...

Can anyone confirm how long it usually takes to receive the AOR upon submitting your CEC application? I'm under a very tight deadline where my PGWP is expiring very soon (next month) so I would really need to get my BOWP application sent asap.
