Expiring Open Work Permit

Hello all,
I am asking for a friend.
So her open work permit is expiring this March 19, she already applied for EE and got a passport request yesterday, but by the time she landed, her work permit may already expired 2-3 weeks before she got her Passport back and finish the flagpole.
In her case, does she need to apply for an extension on her Open Work Permit? even though she only need to extend it for 2-3 more weeks?
Or can she still work and remain in canada even when her work permit expired? because she is waiting for her landing?

Any input is appreciated.

I will be following this thread as my concern is similar. My PR application completion is estimated to be July 25, 2020 while my PGWP expires on June 20, 2020. Still unsure if I need to apply for bridging work permit because of this case. Hope someone can provide input.

I would suggest you to keep a close eye ni your application.

It is too early for you to apply for BWP since were still 5 months away and you're not eligible yet.

I would recommend you to do so if you haven't received your PR around 1 month before the expiration of your PGWP. Remember that to be eligible for a BWP your current work permit must no be expired yet and will expire within 4 months.

Since most applications take fewer then 6 months, you might just waste your money if you apply too early (although many people are refunded when they get their PR and have applied for a BWP but not yet received it) but should definitely apply if you haven't received your PR and the expiration date of your PGWP ir approaching. Since you're in implied status fomr the very moment you apply you will be safe and won't ave to leave Canada to wait for your final decision of you proceed this way.

Cheers!

Thank you!
If I receive a COPR before my PGWP expires, will that be sufficient to not need to apply for the extension? Do I need to flagpole if ever?

Exactly, that'd be the day when your status changes to PR. If not just make sure to apply for your BWP before the expiration date of your PGWP just to be safe.

Some applications take a few months over 6 months (in my case 9 months 1 day) to be processed, so you need to considered all the scenarios and be prepared just in case. Hopefully not though.

Most likely you will have an interview scheduled at your local IRCC office for your landing interview. That's when you'll receive your COPR.

If that is the case, she should apply for a Bridging Work Permit before the expiration of her current Work Permit. However, since she has already had her PR approved it doesn't really make much sense. If she applies for the BWP chances are she'll be getting it refunded anyways.

I would contact IRCC through the call center to make sure. I would say it doesn't really matter, but can't say for sure.

Is there always an interview?

There is always an interview which can be either at a Port of Entry or at a local IRCC office. Some people get their passport requested and have a visa stamped and are required to flagpole.

I read somewhere that IRCC started transitioning from requiring flagpole to inland interviews. I think it depends on where you live and if there's an IRCC office nearby.

If you’re already in Canada
We’ll contact you and let you know what to do next.

You’ll need to have a short interview with an officer. You have two options for your interview:
-make an appointment at one of our offices in Canada (best option)
-go to a Canadian “port of entry” (border crossing), and present:
-proof that you have the funds to support yourself and your family
-your Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and your permanent resident visa (if we gave you one)

During the interview the officer will:
-make sure all your documents are valid
-ask you a few questions to make sure you still meet the terms to immigrate to Canada
-confirm your Canadian mailing address, so we can mail your permanent resident card (PR card)

No. Receiving a COPR doesn't mean anything for status. You would need to then actually land as a PR, which requires an appointment with IRCC or to flagpole at the border. You need to do that before your current work permit expires or apply for an extension, as being out of status can prevent you from being able to land as a PR.
