Just a quick question guys...

How long are police clearances usually good for? We did ours in August, application sent in September.

Will they ask for new certificates at some point? Just asking because my husband is coming to Canada next month (on visitor visa) and if they are gonna ask for new ones down the road we will do new ones now... Thoughts?

PCCs must be issued within 6 months if you are still residing in the country from where it is issued.

If you are no longer in that country, the PCC must be issued after you left that country, but will remain valid indefinitely (as long as you don't return there).

So, most applications take longer than 6 months, which means that everyone has to send in their police certificate twice? It makes no sense to me. For Guatemala you can only get those certificates in person, so I guess my husband should get new ones before he comes to Canada? Before they even ask for new ones?

So if the police certificate was issued in December 2016, (we submitted application at the end of January), then they are going to be asking for another one in July?

They still haven't asked for the one from Canada.

If they ask for another one from a country that needs it translated, does that mean we need to do the translation again??

The majority of applicants are not required to send PCCs twice. IRCC must receive PCCs within 6 months of being issued; that does not mean that the PCCs expire after 6 months.

Second PCCs are usually only requested when an app is taking at least a year or more to be processed.

As I said above, the requirement to receive the PCC within 6 months of issue does not mean it expires after 6 months.

The vast majority of applicants are not required to send a PCC for Canada.

Ok, thanks for your help Canuck. I think I will tell my husband to go get new ones done anyway, just in case. They only cost about 10$ each, and it's better to have them ready in case they ask for new ones.

I did the same thing, I submitted my Police Certificate from the United Kingdom that I got in April 2015 before I came to Canada on my IEC Open Work Permit but did not realize that because I returned for 2 weeks in May 2016 with my partner that it became invalid. I have therefore applied for a new on on the website in England and it will arrive here in around 10/15 days in which I will re-submit when it is requested. It cost around $80.00

If it's only $10, then he may as well. Even if they aren't requested by IRCC, its always good to have them for any potential job/volunteer applications.
