Just want to hear some stories about hispanic people after landing in Canada. How good or difficult it was? What are the choices we have to improve the language (english)? how was the experience getting a new job?

There aren't many Hispanics/Latinos in Canada (compared to the U.S.), so the first assumption many people seem to make is that you are First Nation and you can be treated as such.

Really? ??? And i guess not a lot latinos from the Caribbean uh? I'm from Puerto Rico! and hope to move to Canada soon!

Toronto seems to be developing a Latino community, somewhat in Montreal also. My experience with the First Nation assumption comes from the western part of the country. Its probably not that bad in the East.

I'm moving to the west area....Vancouver, BC. so i don't know what to expect ....i will just try to be positive! ::)

OMG! I cannot bvelieve the assumptions this people make woth the word latino? What do you think? We are all lazy brownies in a poncho sleeping under a cactus? WTF?

Morena,

you can find good blogs aout latinso in Canada here:

loszieglerencanada.com
inmigrantescanada.com
thezieglersblog.com

And don't listen to these idiots. You are who you are and noone will make a difference with you. This is not USA

Thanks for the links! i will check them ASAP!!

This may not be the USA, but Canada has its own ethnic/racial issues. One of which is discrimination/prejudice/racism against First Nations people. The default assumption many Canadians make about Latinos and Hispanics is that they are First Nation, because they aren't used to having a large Latino/Hispanic community in their midst. If that doesn't bother you: fine. If you are sensitive to that type of thing be prepared.

Thanks for the reply! i'm not too sensitive! i'm very proud of my roots....hispanic and black latino!! First time i visited Canada i saw so many people from Asia i was wonder if they have latinos and in what areas! My husband is hindu, so i love to be around different cultures and traditions.

I am hispanic (from US). I've been living in Alberta for 3 years, I've not had an issue in Canada with any type of discrimination.

I was glad to read this. We are moving to Alberta soon (I hope) and my husband is Latino. He is not very sensitive but it is nice to hear that it should not be a problem.

I'm so glad to find more latinos!!! Hooooray!! is good to know....very good! i was born in the States too.

You can also take a look at mequieroir. com (in Spanish), they have a forum for immigrants to Canada

Hola,

There are many Latinos in the West side of Canada -never heard of the confusion with First Nations people!
