Experienced Mental Health Worker - Visa Enquiry

Hi,

I am just looking for some clarification on when to apply for a work permit, I am slightly confused and I have had contradictory advice.

I have not received a job offer yet, as in fact I've yet to apply for any jobs. I've decided to move to Canada as my partner is Canadian and lives in Toronto. Currently I am in the process of applying for jobs and in the meantime I was hoping to apply for a temporary work visa. I am a British Citizen.

My questions are:
1) Am I able to apply for a temporary work visa without a current job offer?
2) Is there a deadline for visa applications?
3) Would it be better to come to Canada as a visitor, search for employment then apply for the work permit?

I have been searching for these answers for myself but I seem to get mixed opinions and answers. I would greatly appreciate someones advice and expertise .

1) No - you can't. You need a job offer and also an approved Labour Market Opinion from your employer.
2) I don't understand this question. There is no deadline for applying for a temporary work permit if that's what you're asking.
3) Sure - you can come as a visitor and search for a job here.

How old are you? Depending on your age you might qualify for a working holiday visa.

Yes - the working holiday visa program is your best bet. There are a limited number of spaces available and they fill up quickly. So make sure you apply as soon as the program re-opens for 2014. You can find more information here:

1. You better be really quick though for IEC, first 2 rounds went in 15 minutes and 9 minutes. Note that without a medical,you won't be able to work in health care.
