From 2014 they do record entries on both the sides, go to https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/request.html and check your travel history they should have it because as soon as you enter into Canada US side system gets updated and vice versa. And you can always check Canadian side entries by ordering CBSA travel report for $5.00

Thanks

This is an interesting topic for me because after I (hopefully) get PR I plan to keep my current US job (I work remotely as well) at least until we get good and settled and my wife and I can get jobs in Canada...this way the steady income keeps flowing during the process. I will also have to travel to the US at times for meetings but not as frequently as you. I will probably only have to travel about once per quarter.

Your question is a good one. The days that you are completely outside of Canada are definitely going to count as days not in Canada for your residency obligation (730 days in the 5 year period). The question that I wasn't originally sure the answer to is on how those days are calculated. So let's say for example you travel on Monday to the US, stay there Tue-Thurs and travel home to Canada on Friday. Do you only count 3 days out of country? What happens to the Monday and Friday where you are in both countries on those days? If you go to the US and come back to Canada in the same day does that count as a day against you as out of the country? These are all questions I also had.

I believe I have found the answers here:

6.4 Day For the purpose of calculating the number of days to comply with the residency obligation in A28(2)(a), a day includes a full day or any part of a day that a permanent resident is physically present in Canada. Any part of a day spent in Canada, or otherwise in compliance with A28(2)(a), is to be counted as one full day for the purpose of calculating the 730 days in a five-year period.

The version of the PDF is from Jan 2015 and I got it from CIC's webpage so it should be accurate.

Given this CIC definition for "DAY" in my above example of traveling on Monday and Friday, only Tue-Thurs (3 days) would count against you. Also, if you were to cross every day and come back every day, none of those days would count against you.
