I've been issued with PR letter and I'm from one of the visa-exempt countries, so there is no visa stamped on my passport.

The question is I'll be landing in June and I heard that after March 2016 anyone travelling to Canada by air must show valid visa or eTA to the check-in counter before boarding the flight. In this case do I need to apply for the eTA in advance?

Thanks guys!

Yes. As the COPR is not a travel document, you will require either a visa or an eTA.

1. If you are from a visa exempt country, you would require an ETA, if you are from a non-exempt, you don't require an ETA since you will have a "visa" affixed to the passport.

If you are in possession of a visa, of any kind, an eTA is not required. A visa is considered to be an implicit eTA. You don't need one for land borders anyway.

For those who have already got PR card then eTA is not required, neither for anyone who travel to Canada by ferries or driving from US.

Since I'll be landing which means I'm yet to obtain the PR card, plus I'm entering Canada by air, that's why I would like to know whether the PR letter could be treated as the PR card when check-in at the airport.

It seems that it's better to get eTA in advance.

Thanks!

Hi, this is extract from CIC Website, may be helpful for you.

"I have a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (CoPR) and will travel to Canada. Do I need an eTA?

No. If you are from a visa-exempt country and have been issued a Confirmation of Permanent Residence document, you do not need an eTA.

If you are from a visa-required country, you are not eligible for an eTA. You have been issued a permanent resident visa in your passport for your travel to Canada.

In both cases, make sure you travel to Canada with your valid passport and your valid Confirmation of Permanent Residence document."

No, it cannot. Despite what the CIC website may imply, the CoPR is not a travel document. It literally says so on it.

If you have landed (CoPR is signed), you are a permanent resident. You don't need a eTA, and you aren't eligible for one anyway. If you need to travel, you need the PR Card, or to apply for a PR travel document.

If you are from a country that requires visa, your PR visa is perfectly fine to come land. If you're from a visa-waiver country, and don't have an eTA, the airline is going to require you to have one - your CoPR is not good enough.
