Entering Canada from the USA while waiting for PGWP

Applied PGWP inland. Waiting for PGWP. Can I go USA and come back? My study permit would've expired, but I have maintained status. I was wondering if someone was in a similar boat here.

I thought you can use an expired TRV if you've only went to the USA and back.

I have a temporary resident visa. Can I leave Canada and come back? (cic.gc.ca)
