Hi,

My first employment is thru an agency. In the work history portion of the application, should I declare myself as self-employed ,employed or contractual?
Note: They have issued a T4, where income is declared in line 81 (Placement or Employment Workers). This is because agencies, considered you as a contractor. Does that mean that I cannot declare the agency as my employer?

Thank you.

I would suggest not putting it as Self-employed.

Write it similar to this: 'Working at Company B (as contractual employee for Agency A)'

-The agency is your employer they only send you for assignments weather it be days, weeks, months or years
- I did my application at YMCA and I worked through agencies before and what they did is to put the agency name (which is yur employer) and in bracket you can put the place where u worked. CIC does know the difference

Thanks for all your reply.

My contract states that I am an independent contractor that is why they do not deduct taxes on my pay and I had to pay it on my own.

Thanks for all your help. :)

I am assuming on your T4 Box 14 "employment Income" is blank, which basically means you are self employed or an independent contractor. I personally don't understand why people are scared to declare that they are self employed? as long as you have NOAs or T4s with $ to support that you actually work there shouldn't be any problems.

Yes Box 14 was blank that is why I raised this question. It is not because I am scared to declare that I am self-employed but rather I want to declare it correctly. Thank you. :)

In addition to your Box 14 on your T4 to be blank, your T4 should show Code 11 on box 29 which is CRA code for placement or employment agency workers :)
