I became a PR two years back. I will be eligible to apply for citizenship by the end of this year (Dec 2015 if the 3/4 -1095 rule stays). By that time, I intend to resign from my current job and start my own consulting or I may just lead a retired life. Will this have a bearing on my application for citizenship?

Welcome to the forum!
self employment/unemployment etc can cause delays in your citizenship application. CIC can issue you a residence questionnaire to prove your residence. However there are lots of factors on which residence questionnaire is issued. Please do a google search to find the answers.
