Employment records for companies that have gone out of business

I'm at the point now where I'm required to submit employment records for all of my listed companies of employment.

I have a bit of a problem being able to do this because all companies I've worked for in the past have since gone out of business (7 companies in total).

I worked for the companies between the years of '97 to '07, and I kept no records such as payslips, contracts and the like from that long ago.

What I do have for some are wikipedia pages and other websites that show the companies are no longer operating.
I also have screen captures of websites that show my name credited on product information.

Has anyone got any ideas of what else I can contribute to show proof of my employment?

Second question to tack on to this.

I also worked freelance for a while, but never got paid for the work I did (feels like I had quite the run of bad luck). In this case do I write my own employment letter?

Do you have any tax documents that have the companies names on them? If you are from the US, that'd be your W2 or 1099 forms. You might be able to contact your bank and see if they still have any images of the checks you deposited from them. Some countries also allow you to request older income tax returns, but some do charge a fee for them and they might take awile to get.
Those are the only things I can think of that might help. I sort of had the same problem, first 6 years of my career where at places that no longer exists. Luckily, I have letters from the last few places I've work going back 14 years. So, I just didn't put down the companies I don't have paper work for.
I'd try to get those tax documents as proof of payment, the screen shots of the product information, and then include a letter of explaination to explain why you cannot prove the letter or other documents.

Not the US, UK. However I will certainly try and get tax documentation. I'll give them a call.

My online banking only allows me to go back to 2008 (I need '97 to '07), so I'll give them a call too and see if they can access older records.

You have probably thought of this already, but what about doing a search for your old bosses or supervisors, clients, etc. I don't know how much luck you will have convincing CIC of your experience with self written ref letters. Focus on the employment in the past 10 years.
