Gentlemen
I received my PR 4 months ago and after that I came to Canada. Since then I’m applying for jobs on a national level and looking to relocate unfortunately till date I got very few interviews and promises only!

I’m afraid that I will be spending from my life savings for a year now and I don’t want to cause any liability to the country but could someone help me to know if I can apply for Employment Insurance at this stage hence I have two kids and my wife is not working as she needs to get her degree in dentistry equivalence from Canada?

No - you can't apply. You don't qualify for employment insurance.

To qualify for EI, you must have first worked in Canada a minimum of 420 to 910 insurable hours (depending on the province).

Since you haven't worked in Canada yet, you don't qualify to apply for EI.

General EI question:

Anyone knows how long is it taking these days to process an EI application?

My wife applied for EI (medical leave). We submitted all the paperwork a month ago and she still hasn't received a response. Canada's website says:

"Our service standard is to provide you with a decision within 28 days of filing your application. We aim to meet this standard 80% of the time."

But it's been more than 28 days.

Full-time employee (37.5 h/week) in Ontario for the past 20 months. First EI claim ever. Got Dr's note for a month sick leave. Record of employment submitted electronically by her employer.

Strange that this isn’t covered through employer for such a short leave.
