Employment Insurance = Illegible for sponsoring?

Hello all,

I've been trying to find an answer to my question without much luck.

I've recently been laid off and decided to get on employment insurance (chomage) for the first time. However, I am also in the process of sponsoring my Australian partner.

In the IMM1344E form there is a sponsor eligibility section with the question: Are you in receipt of social assistance for a reason other than disability?

I cannot find what classifies as social assistance and would like to know if the employment insurance I've applied for is considered social assistance. I've had people tell me yes it is and other tell me no it isn't.

Also, does anyone know if there's a way of contacting CIC directly without having to physically go to their offices?

EI is not social assistance. Welfare is social assistance.

EI is not Social Assistance. You paid for EI. Its just like any other insurance, I would be mad as hell if EI was considered Social Assistance.
