1. He can't deport you.

2. Contact the Employment Standards office in your province for help/advice about your rights (and employer's rights), here's the list:

OK thank you

Actually I became Permanent Resident as a Store Manager in Alberta (employer driven stream)
My employer threatens me that he will tell immigration that i was a cashier and also he can blame me in case of short inventory and the police will take action against me. he keeps on threatening me.
I came to Canada as a student and paid $26000 fees for two years. I don't want to jeopardize my permanent residency.
He is paying me just $10 and quite often pays me less than the hours i work. I use to let go when l was not PR but now he abuses too.
he is forcing me to do the job. Can i just hand over the keys to him and leave?
he is emotionally harassing  me

Ignore threats.

Did you/your employer *in fact* falsify the supporting documents you (both) provided for your PNP/PR application? (I.e. Manager or cashier?).

Call / research on Internet Alberta Employment standards as already advised.

If your employer is not paying you minimum legal wage, he's in trouble. Do not let yourself be intimidated.

Unless he can *prove* that you are stealing his inventory, he's bullsh*tting. Do not let yourself be intimidated.

Yes you can, depending on legal notice period, hand over the keys & leave. Do not let yourself be intimidated.

Do you know that if you are being threatened *you* can request assistance from Law Enforcement ?

For help with ALL the above, call/research on Internet Alberta Employment standards.

You are now a PR. You have rights. If you need help with the above suggestions, do a search for "[your home country] + community group + Alberta". You'll most likely find more help

If you obtained PR by falsely claiming you were a manager when you were really just a cashier, and CIC finds out, then you might have an issue. If your PR status was obtained by answering every question honestly then you have nothing to worry about and you can tell your employer to jam it.

I can't support anyone cheating to get PR status. I'm not implying that you necessarily did, but if that's indeed what has happened then you will need to be careful. If your employer is also acting illegally then your only (somewhat shady) recourse is to tell him that if he squeals on you, then you'll squeal on him back, and maybe it would be best if you both just dropped it and moved on.

Tell your employer that you are quitting. If he threatens you that he is going to try to have you deported or accuse you of theft, you can tell him you kept records of all your hours and you are contemplating taking them to the labour board and filing a complaint against him for underpaying you. If you do, they will come and tear his business apart to make sure that he's paying all his employees all the hours they work and that he is paying at least minimum wage. So maybe he can get you in trouble but you can get him in trouble too. If he's not an idiot, he'll let you go because he knows if he gets you in trouble, you do the same to him.

Hello guys,

discussion is really informative. I have few questions. please read through my details below

I am a Web/UX designer with over 10 years of experience working with Fortune 500 companies. I was interviewed by few Canadian employers and now in process of finalizing one of the offer by a design agency. The employer will sponsor my application under PNP employer stream. My questions are

1) What if this job does not go really well as designers usually have friction and move on to next roles due to this. Will that effect my PR status?
2) What should I do if my employer or myself is not satisfied with the working environment etc? Do I need a new sponsor to switch to my new job or will that be OK to switch at a standard notice?
3) Please share any implications under PNP employer sponsor stream.

Regards

1. No, once you have PR.

2. You contact the employment standards organisation where you work (this applies to both TWP & PR holders). Or the Union (if applicable).. If the issue can not be resolved to your satisfaction, a PR can quit with standard/contract notice. A TWP holder would need a new LMIA & WP, a PNP nominee still waiting for PR: depends on PNP rules/province.

Thanks for the prompt reply. This is a bit relieving for me. I am in process and will get my PR in next few months. Though my employer seems to be a promising agency but was just curious if some conflict arise in future. BTW, just to tell you that I am outside Canada and my selection was made only because of my world class portfolio and experience.
