Emergency travel after landing

I'm in a bit of a situation right now.

I have recently landed in Canada after getting my confirmation of permanent residence. Everything is all good and approved as a landed immigrant as I wait for my PR card to arrive in the mail (6-8 weeks).

My situation is that I have a serious family emergency that I need to return home for. The CoPR has written across it in large text "not valid for travel", and I assume I can't leave until my PR card physically arrives. My question is... How do I go about being able to leave Canada in case of emergency? Is there a specific area of CIC that needs to be contacted? I don't know if I'm going to have time to email and wait weeks for a response. Is it the canadian immigration that needs to be contacted to discuss the matter, or do I just contact my embassy to work this out? Any info would be appreciated.

Hi,
you can leave Canada without any problem. Traveling back without the PR card would be a problem. In order to get back to Canada you'll need a travel document which you can apply for at the Canadian embassy while in your country.

Thanks for the info. So I should just go to the canadian embassy/consulate while back in Australia to get a travel document so I can essentially land again? I've already been living in Canada for 3 years, it's so strange all these documents you need. What exactly is the reason for needing a new document, despite already being a PR (minus the physical card)? Surely they just enter your name in the system when arriving back in Canada and can see the situation? Just trying to get my head around it. Obviously I'll do whatever it takes, just sick of paper work at this stage.

Australia is a visa exempt country so don't apply for the travel doc. Travel home and on your way back just travel as a tourist from Australia to Canada (in order to board the plain). Don't mention you're a landing emigrant (in that case they would ask for your PR card). When already in Canada show your COPR at the point of entry.

i dont' think it works that way if he/she has a non return ticket to Canada... They will ask before they embark the plain, I'm from a visa exempt country and they do check multiple times. So yes ask for the travel document at the embassy. Better be safe than sorry

Yes, traveling without the travel document works for visa exempt. I agree though the travel document would be the best solution.

No travel document is needed to return if you hold a visa exempt passport. My husband is visa exempt and traveled in and out of Canada several times without issues (and no travel document) before his PR card arrived.
