That's kind of how it works. The 3-of-4 years thing is to get a rolling number, and to ensure people don't rack up their 3 years over a decade or something. So if you leave the country in the middle for an extended period, some of your time in Canada might start to get erased and no longer eligible for citizenship.
Also remember any time you spend physically in Canada BEFORE landing as a PR, will count as 1/2 time towards citizenship (of course still subject to the 3/4 years rule).
Remember to start recording details of all your vacations and trips in and out of Canada starting NOW, since when you accumulate the 3-years requirement you'll have a heck of a time trying to remember the exact dates you came in and out of the country over the last 3-4 years
