I applied on September 2004 from Cairo,Egypt and till now i haven't recieved any response from them. I was hoping to hear from them beginning of this year since i've already passed the processing times stated on the CIC website. I recently heard that because of the econmic crisis canada is freezing immigration for now. Is that true? and what should i do now?

When and where did you hear such a news? is it from teh authorities or rumours? As far as I know the process is still going on and applications are being handled in normal way. The short listed 38 NOC is still in demand as far as Canada is concerned.
I am yet to see any official communication or anouncement on CIC newsletter or website.

I've heard it from a friend. I'm a senior software engineer and it's listed in the 38 NOC. If the econmic crisis doesn't have an effect on immigration then what's taking them so long to process my application. I'm still in queue for over 4 years now.

During a recent forum I attended,Jason Kenney the immigration Minister said that the Goverment sees 60% of all new jobs filled by Immigrants and Immigration will be kept at current levels for the forseeable future,So If there are no Immigrants Where will Canada get its workers to replace the Baby Boomers retiring????

You are right BCGuy. The process of imigration is slower than the economic downturn and upturn so they need to have people in place to replace and also for future boom.

The processing time for Cairo Office is 40 month. Since your application submission had passed the 48 month I think you should try to contact them and ask of your file status.

Case Specific Enquiry:

immigration is a long term policy. so short term economic situation will not impact this - this is what i was told by a government official..

rest is open for interpretation.

One more point I want to add in this discussion that only those economies are worst effected by this cireses, those heavily rely on US economy for import/export. Either they are banks or companies. this is one aspect only but most important.

I think that if the recession deepens, or turns into a depression, then you will see fewer and fewer work permits approved for low and semi skilled jobs.
