Hello,
I am a Canadian citizen, currently living in Canada with my New Zealand partner of 5 years. She is here on a visitor visa.
We are planning to apply for permanent residency (likely outland, given prior posts). However, there is a real chance that I will be transferred to a foreign office for work in the next year or two (for an extended period of time, say 2-3 years). I suspect that this means we would fail the application (and/or would need to cancel it).

Would doing so have any impact on us when we move back to Canada after being abroad (and presumably have to re-apply)? Does having a failed/cancelled application cause future problems, because we left the country during the application process?

Any help is appreciated - sorry, but most posters stop at the cancelled visa, and we're uncertain of what happens after that.

Thanks,

Quite possibly. It's fine if you live outside Canada during processing, however when you update your address with CIC to one out of Canada, they may ask for proof you intend to relocate back to Canada when PR app is complete. If you are honest and tell them you have no intention to move back for 2-3 years, they will most likely cancel your app and tell you to re-apply later when you are closer to returning.

No it should be fine. If anything they may just put more stress on the proof you submit for intent to relocate to Canada when app is complete. But shouldn't be anything to worry about.

Hi

You say you may be transferred in a year or two. If it's not going to be any sooner than that, submit your app ASAP and it should be approved well before you leave Canada. Sydney is a very fast office, averaging around 6-7 months. Even if it ends up in Ottawa, it would still be done in less than a year.

Very true, timing of exactly when the job transfer happens and when PR is approved would play a big role here.

If she can get PR status before you left Canada for work, then it would be fine since time she spends outside Canada living with her Canadian spouse, fully counts towards her residency obligation.

Hi Logan,

I sent a message to you. Kindly check and please share you thoughts.
