Education Vs Experience

I am planning to apply for Express Entry this year. I have master degree in Mechanical Engineering stream however my work experience is related to IT/Software development. Now, if i apply for the category of Programming/Software will my education qualification will be considered. In short my concern is whether qualification and work experience should always match or it can be different

It can be different, you'll get points for both.
