Folks,

I have sent this to the Minister of Immigration, Mr. Alexander and also the Shadow Minister in the opposition. I am sure there will be other accords and/or agreements in place for other occupations and as such I am not sure what the assessments obtain other than costs to applicants and income for some organizations.

Dear Mr. Alexander,

Trust this message finds you and your studious staff well.

I have just reviewed the points criterion for the Federal Skilled Worker category under the Express Entry program and wanted to bring your attention to something which I consider unjust and/or unnecessary for some applicants.

I see that potential candidates under this program are only allocated points for their qualifications if they have had their foreign credentials assessed in Canada. For some professionals, like engineers for example from certain countries, there have been long-standing accords that have recognized university degrees for equivalency. For engineers like me there is the "Washington Accord" which recognizes degrees from Australia, NZ, Canada, USA, Singapore, etc as equivalent. (see: http://www.ieagreements.org/Washington-Accord/)

In such cases having one to have their degrees assessed seems a moot point as the relevant authoritative body in Canada has already done this. Also, having a potential candidate undergo an assessment so that they can gain more points seems a bit unfair and it also adds additional costs to applicants.

I wonder what your take is on this.

Best regards

I have sent a note to Engineers Canada on this as well.

In the meantime, I suggest those in other professions do some research and find out whether paying someone in excess of $300 just to say "yes, this degree is equivalent to a Canadian University degree" is justified when the profession's registration body in Canada may have already done that through reciprocal arrangements.

I looked at WES and that is exactly what they do - go through courses to say yes the curriculum is ok - imagine this - they have done that 1000's of times so why do they have to keep doing it on an individual basis. Courses at Universities for programs don't change very often, especially for professional courses like engineering, medicine, law, dentistry, etc.
