Hello everyone,

Just posting on here to inquire about entering Canada early before my study abroad exchange commences in September. Essentially I will be studying at a university from September to December 2017 in Ontario from my host UK university who I was nominated by. However if possible I would like to enter the country early as a friend of mine is undertaking a work placement (from the same university as mine) starting mid July and we wish to rent a private apartment together and we would like to go travelling across Canada and the US too before my studies start. I have not applied for my student visa yet as I am waiting to hear from the Canadian university itself and the forms that will come with it.

Another user in another post clarified that I should be fine entering Canada July end and that the CBSA won't question my intent if I am 45 days away from the start of the course. I was hoping whether I could receive further evidence that this is correct from those who know or those who have done this from Europe or better, the UK. Other posts may be outdated and changes could have been made that I may be unaware of. I will not be working whilst in Canada and have more than sufficient funds. The university cites studies start on the 7th of September however I'm sure that welcome classes will come before this. Would people say arriving in mid to late July (21st?) would be fine regarding my circumstances? I would be coming no earlier than that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
James

Hi, did you get your study permit? Do you know how to fill up IMM1294 form? I'm also studying. In London and will go to Ontario later. Could you please contact me? I need some assistance. Thank so much!

Which passport are you travelling on, if a UK one that is visit visa exempt anyway although will need an ETA. Did you even check that you need a study permit given technically as your course is less than 6 months (refer CIC site- study permits) not necessarily required although does make things easier when landing? What information has the university given you about visas/permits, assume they will give you a letter of introduction if applying for a permit ?

Yes it is a UK passport. Yes I saw that, however I assumed if I was to go, say in mid-late July if possible, that'd be 6 months from July to mid December so I would need to apply for a visa, right? If I was going straight from end of August to December as when my studies would be I know I would be okay with a study permit but as I've said I wish to travel slightly earlier and this case apply for a visa? I am still waiting for my Canadian university to contact me regarding documents and such and my host university here in the UK say it could be a couple of weeks until they do.
