Hi

Back in 2010 I had a drink and drive charge in Thailand (my home town). Now I have a job offer in Montreal and I have been worrying if that DUI charge back in 2010 would cause me any issue to get a work permit at all.

All answers would be much appreciated!

What was your penalty for the DUI? A DUI makes you inadmissible to Canada for five years from the time you completed any probation / paid any penalty resulting from the DUI. If five years have passed since that time, then you can apply for a work permit but will likely have to go through the rehabilitation process before the work permit can be issued (which will add processing time). Make sure you answer the application honestly when it comes to your charges.

Thanks so much for your speedy reply!

I paid the penalty and did a community service of 24 or 48 hours I can't remember exactly how many hours but not more than 48 hours. Yes, five years have passed. I will definitely answer the application honestly. I heard FBI check would take like 6 months too, is that true? - I need a FBI check because I used to work in the States for two years too.
