Hey can someone please help? My brother has been charged for DUI his court date is in Jan. I really cannot imagine that he would do anything like this that is going to ruin his career. Mistakes happen, we all learn from mistakes. This is the first thing that he got himself into, cops handcuffed him. He's been depressed and going through a lot last few days.. Did anyone get through this? Please give me any suggestions you have or contact of the best lawyer? Poor guy wasted his one year of his work permit going back home when the pandemic started and when he came back he wasted 5-8 months looking for a full time job with the Covid going on and when finally he got something that he can rely on this happened. Please help

He needs to find a good lawyer to represent him (I don't have a recommendation) and aim to get the charges either dropped or reduced to a non-DUI offence. Laws have recently changed and DUIs are much bigger problems now for temporary residents in Canada than they were a few years ago. If he's convicted with a DUI, this is going to create issues for him and remaining in Canada will be difficult. Start looking for a good lawyer now.

Just to be clear, he should be hiring two separate lawyers. One lawyer who specializes in criminal court cases and can try to help him get the charge reduced or dropped. And a second lawyer who specializes in immigration law and can advise him on immigration matters. You need two different specialties here - so two different lawyers. Don't look for one lawyer who can do both or he / she may not be the best in either.

He needs to get the charge reduced or dropped. That's basically the situation he's in. If he gets a DUI conviction, he'll need to leave Canada.
