I'm new here and not sure if there is a thread on this.. there is SO many people on here lol.

My fiance and I have been together for 4 years now and just recently got engaged in October of 2010. Weddings set for 2012 but before we get a little carried away with wedding plans we would like to get this sponsorship thing situated. A girlfriend of mine just gained dual citizenship of Sweden and I was wondering if this is possible and how easy/hard it would be to do dual Canadian/U.S dual? If not no big deal... but I need to first start this whole sponsorship process, it's a little scary and overwhelming. I will be attending school this year and we would like to apply for the sponsorship while I'm in school, that way by the time the wedding happens in 2012 we will HOPEFULLY be situated in the sponsorship area. That way were married and sponsored..or does it not work like that? Probably not right, that would be just to dang easy?
Now do we just start applying for it? IF the dual citizenship is a no go? I'm so overwhelmed and excited with the wedding & PR stuff that I may think I'm in over my head, so help! PLEASE.
Any info anyone could give or throw their 2 cent's in would be so greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Yes - you can be a dual US/Canadian citizen.

Before you can be a Canadian citizen, you first have to become a permanent resident. For more information about becoming a permanent resident, start by reading the first post in the following thread by Leon:

Permanent Residency first. Live in Canada with PR for 3 out of the previous 4 years (1095 days), THEN worry about citizenship. Sponsorship doesn't grant citizenship, only the right to live, study, and work in Canada. That said, the US and Canada do allow dual citizenship, in that one won't revoke the citizenship of their country when you obtain the other, like some countries do.

Okay thanks, I was just a little thrown off by talking to my friend who received dual citizenship in Sweden right away. She explained it to me like it was easy as 1-2-3 but every country is different.
I did read the post by Leon and I guess my next question would be... Would my next step be to obtain a visa so I can stay with him to say I have lived with him? I have gone there for weeks sometimes a month or two at a time and would be considered to live there in my own words, but is that even legal? I don't know how this system works and don't want to mess anything up.
Thank's for all the response's and help!

If you are thinking of applying under the Common-Law category, you need to have lived under the same roof together for 12 consecutive months. A month here or there doesn't count. You can be "living together" if you are there on visitor record though, and same goes for him living in the states.

Thanks for the link awor!

So my best bet is to just plan the wedding get married in 2012 and start the process then?
He has mentioned something about doing a bankrupt in the next month or so. Which I'm assuming will affect us in this process.
Is it possible for his Uncle or Mother to sponsor me? They have already said they would no problem..but is that harder or easier.
Sorry for all the questions leading into each other..Just wanting to be prepared.
Thanks!

You need to check on the bankruptcy issue. I think if it has not be discharged yet then he can not sponsor you until it is.

His uncle or mother cannot sponsor you. Also Canada does allow you to have dual citizen ship but if you have sweden citizenship and US citizenship then you cannot get Canadian Citizenship without revoking one either US or Swedish.

You must either be married or common law for him to sponsor you. To be recognized as common law, you must have lived together for at least one full year before submitting the application.

If he declares bankrupcy, he cannot sponsor you until the bankrupcy has been discharged.

It is not possible for his uncle or his mother to sponsor you. Only he is allowed to sponsor you.

Okay, thanks!
I don't have swedish dual citizenship my friend received her's in a blink of an eye that's why I figured I'd ask on the dual thing..

Okay, so No bankruptcy, and no one but HIM can sponsor me.
So we should get married, file and I should apply for visitor's visa?

Canada may allow you to keep multiple, but other may not. And then you have to revoke one.
