Dual citizenship of spouse

I'm the Canadian doing an inland sponsorship of my spouse. He recently obtained US citizenship and has an American passport. He is a Dutch citizenship by birth and lived in The Netherlands until four years ago. His Dutch passport has expired.

Will he need to renew it and submit both passports?

Does he apply as an American or Dutch citizen?

Does it make a difference about which country will be handling his application?

I understand he'll need police checks from both countries.

Apply as a US citizen, he can have dual nationality.
Only difference is timelines. US is probably best if he is living there. I would advise you to do an outland through Buffalo, it will be alot faster. Only advantage of the inland is if he is already in Canada he could possibly get an Open Work Permit IF you get first stage approval. It can sometimes take 2+ years to get PR inland.
He will need police certificates from any country he has lived in for more than 6 months.

Thank you.

If applying for inland does it make a difference what the home country is? Would there be a time difference for two countries of citizenship instead of one?

No it wouldnt make a difference as he would still need police certificates from the states and also from his home nationality. Either way they will check his background anywhere he has lived for over 6 months. They don't make preferences over nationalities :)

Better apply outland through the US, it is faster. Dual nationality does not matter.

Thank you for your advice.

Not possible for him to apply from outside, but I'm glad to know that having two citizenships won't cause a delay.

Edit: have read more about outside applications and now understand that we could apply that way. Thanks!

Hi,

I'm in a similar situation to yours and I am looking for advice. I am the spouse being sponsored and I have dual citizenship Egypt and Bahrain. I am soon getting married in Egypt, as an Egyptian to my fiance who is in Egyptian-Canadian.

Did your spouse send his application using the Dutch or US passport in the end? Also, did he marry you as a Dutchman, or as an American?

I am getting married as an Egyptian, but want to send in my sponsorship application using my Bahrain passport (although I will show evidence that I am a citizen of both countries). Is that OK?
