Droping a semester????

Hi
A friend of mine will join Cambrian Hanson International Academy for hotel management program in January 2014.
Hotel management program is of 4 semesters with regular 16 months study with no scheduled breaks.

My question is that can he drop a semester after attending first two consecutive semesters from January to August?
He wants to take break from study from September to December to work full time to earn fees for the next year?
Would it cause any problem to him in future?

From Jan, 2014 , If you take semester off. You'll be on real trouble. They are getting strict about it.

droping a semester is allowed subject to reasons of medicals or similiar..

sem 1 - should have atleast 3 gpa and must be in good standing

all this is critical to extend visa beyond timeline given

As per new rules, dropping a semester will put you into trouble .

I dont agree with it,

as long as you are able to prove that u in good standing (good gpa) and due to genuine medical reasons supported by college letter , you can drop semester and request for extension when need be.

and cic must be informed all times..

new rules focus on students not complying to study but choosing to remain and work illegally .

detail out ur status .. need more insight to your situation..
how can one work on study permit unless he or she obtains a off campus work permit which is granted upon succesful compltion of a semester or so.

owp can be used to work within campus during the remaining course of study

This is what the CIC website says about the off-campus work permit: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/work-offcampus.asp

"To work off campus, you must apply for a work permit. Do not begin to work off campus until you have received your work permit. The work permit authorizes you to work up to 20 hours per week during regular academic sessions, and full time during scheduled breaks (for example, winter and summer holidays, and spring break).

A work permit does not guarantee that you will find a job. It is your responsibility to look for work. Even if you work off campus, your studies must be the main reason you are in Canada.

If you are no longer a full-time student or do not maintain satisfactory academic results, you must return your work permit to a local Citizenship and Immigration Canada office."

If you must skip a semester for any reason it is important to discuss it with your International Student Advisor/advocate, Dean of your faculty/program and confirm with CIC before making any decision. If you plan to work while taking a semester off, find out if this is allowed otherwise you could be in breach of the off-campus work permit conditions as well.

Just because there is no off campus work permit as of Jan 2014 doesn't mean your friend can do whatever he wants. He will still have to be a full time student to be allowed to work on a study permit. If he drops a semester to work full time - this will still be a problem. The new rules change nothing in this regard.
