Do you have relatives here with you?
If you are under 19, you must have the approval of a parent or legal guardian. They must also accompany you to ICBC when getting your initial Learners Permit and writing the knowledge test/vision screening exam.

Once you receive the Learners Permit, you must practise driving for a minimum of one year. You must be supervised by someone at least 25 years old at all times (they must be in vehicle with you.) Learners Permit is valid for 2 years. If you feel you need longer than two years, the L permit can be renewed. When you feel ready (after at least one year), you can take the class 7 road driving test and, if you pass, will have novice status. After 24 months of N status, you become a fully fledged driver! The N period can be shortened by 6 months if you satisfactorily complete an ICBC approved driving course during the L stage.

Restrictions apply. During L stage, you cannot drive between 0500 and midnite. You can carry only one passenger (other than family members). You cannot use any phone or electronic device including hands-free devices while in a car, even if only a passenger.

1st step is to go to the nearest ICBC location and write the driving knowledge test. The test costs $15.00 each time you take it (if you do not pass on the 1st attempt you will have to pay the exam fee each time you take it). They will also give you a vision screening test. If you pass the test successfully, you will receive a photo learners permit, which costs $10.00.

Practise test is available on line at ICBC web site, and a study booklet can be picked up at no charge at any ICBC location. Where in the Vancouver area do you live? The full service ICBC location I generally use is in Burnaby on Henning Drive (just south of Lougheed Hwy. between Boundary Rd. and Gilmore). You can find the nearest location at the ICBC web site.

Don't forget, YOU MUST be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian when applying to write the exam, as they must sign the form authorising you to obtain a permit.

The next step will be taking the hands-on road test, but you won't be able to proceed to that stage until you've had the Learners Permit for at least one full year.

***IMPORTANT *** Sometime during the first year (learners permit stage) enroll in an approved driving course if you can. This will shorten the duration of the next stage and will help reduce the cost of your auto insurance. The cost of the course is borne solely by you.
