Hello all,

My 16 yo son has all the documents needed ( landing, passport, ect) except for the birth certificate, which was sent with the application. The original birth certificate is overseas and the best we have is a photographed copy. The citizenship test in 3 days.

Is there anything we could do?

Thanks in advance.

Why do you need to take the birth certificate exactly? I've not seen that to be a requirement.

I am not sure how far overseas it is. Depending on the countries involved, there are courier services that get stuff to you within 48 hours.

I have heard of such as well, however, as he is a minor taking the test, I'm not sure how different the rules would be. When I went on the cic website, it had said bring "the original of all supporting documents (such as a birth certificate, legal change of name document, etc.) sent with the application." I have all original documents except for the Birth ceritficate sent with the application.

But I don't think it is even required as a supporting document. How old is he?

If you scroll to the top, it says 16..
Thanks for your helpful input....

Well OP there's not much you can do. Take the copy with you and only show them if they ask for it, then explain what you said above. This would be a good example as to why we shouldn't give more than what they ask for. I don't think it's a big deal because the main thing is the passport and the docs in the letter they sent you when they gave you your test date. Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the reply.

I'll definitely put in an update after the exam (tomorrow) for others that might find themselves in the same situation down the road.

Usually cic officer does not ask for any originals during interview except originals of PR card, IDs, Passports. If required, the officer may ask for originals of other documents. Its still to carry all originals you have.

Son passed citizenship test and then went in for interview.

All went well. Agent was scary ( according to son) and asked some questions and looked at the main four documents( passport, landing document ect) Didn't ask for a birth certificate or anything.

So for anyone else that might also be in a similar situation- you're probably in the clear, provided that everything else matches up.

But try to remember all the originals anyways.
