I was not aware that being self employed made you uneligible for this programs. If you are self employ dont even try...

What self-employed category are you in? I am working under subcontract and is issued a T4A. I can show proof of stead income monthly, should i be eligible for applying?
 
This info is on p. 9 of the current instruction manual:

Note: Any periods of self-employment or unauthorized work cannot be included when calculating the period of work experience."

Consultants or independent contractors are "self-employed". If you receive a T4A instead of a T4, you are likely not eligible. What kind of work permit do you have?

I got paid bi-weekly and constantly throughout the year. I even get the employment letter, pay-stub, a quick report of payment from my company, open work permit, etc. But I get a T4A as a subcontractor. All the supporting documents are genuine, and the job I perform is an office job as well. Should I be eligible?
 
If you are not an employee of the company, if you are a subcontractor, I would say it's bad news. If you remain uncertain, ask the HR person if you are technically an employee or an independent contractor. If it's the latter, according to the rules, you would not be eligible.

Have you checked your eligibility under the Federal Skilled Workers program, Cat 3?
 
Why is it a bad news though? Financial advisors and bookkeepers can be self-employed too, and they belong to NOC A, B as well. How is it possible that they can't apply then? I reckon that working is equal to contributing to the overall economic growth of Canada, and that cannot be counted as equivalent work? Anyways, do you have anyone got rejected with similar circumstances like my case? Thank for your help Jes_ON!
 
Hi Jes_ON, sorry for bothering you again. You mentioned in the previous post about the FSW Cat 3. Do they qualify self-employed as well or why do you suggest that route? Thanks for your input!
 
It's bad news simply because self-employed experience is excluded from eligiblity.

Another point...If you look at the CEC application, the form Schedule 8, Economic Classes, Canadian Experience Class -

At the end of the 2nd page, it asks you to identify if any of your work experience was as self-employed (presumably to exclude it).

The reason I asked about FSW-3 is:
a) Unlike the CEC program, I can't find seem to anything that says self-employed experience doesn't count
b) The 2 stage screening process means that you can get a refund of your application fee if it doesn't pass the initial screening. With CEC there are no refunds if it is determined that you are not eligible.

Of course another big difference between the two is that for the FSW-3 you need to have that 11K in the bank...
 
You are absolutely right Jes_ON. I may give FSW a try then. However, all the documents they I gather from the whole year long have been submitted, now I have to do it again... I don't mind the money matter, as long as I have a chance to get PR. First stage of FSW does not require lots of paperwork so I can go with that route first. Hi There, I am not sure about your situation but just research about it, I don't want you to go thought all the paper work and get the same answer I got. My letter said " according to paragraph 87.1 ( 3) (b) specifically excludes self employment from consideration of an applicant on occupational experience" this is what I got. So my advice do some research before..

Hi Kevin and Cris,

Just wondering whether you guys were on Post Graduate Work Permit before and had tried applying for CEC with your self-employment status? Did you successfully get your PR eventually? I know Cris has responded that his was not successful but I am just wondering whether you guys had applied as a Canadian Graduate or Temporary Foreign Worker status? Did you guys try any other alternative way to get your PR? I am facing the same problem now and would appreciate of you can share your experiences.
