The visa is valid for 1 year from the date of the medical or the expiry of the passport whichever comes first. If you don't use the visa by the expiry date, then you have to reapply from the beginning.

Kingtreek, your medicals expire on February 20, 2010, so there is still time for a decision to be made on your application and a visa to be issued to you. If however you have not received a decision on your application and it is February 20, 2010, then before they will issue you your visa they will have you redo the medicals.

Once you get your visa, it will be valid for one year from the date of the medicals or the date that your passport expires, whichever date comes first. In your case, your visa will be valid for one year from the date of your medicals. Which means that if you get your visa today, you will have to be in Canada before February 20, 2010.

My guess is that they are doing these ridiculous background checks. That's what's happening with my case also. Since March 2009 we haven't received anything as well . . . just waiting for these stupid background checks to clear.

who is handling your case ?
My case is at the visa office in London, England. My husband is living in Sweden, but I must say that he is from Iraq. He is only a permanent resident of Sweden; he still holds his Iraqi passport. I assume that my case is taking so long because my husband is from Iraq . . . however, this is totally UNFAIR because there are many other people from Iraq and middle eastern countries whose applicatioins have finsihed during normal average processing times.

It just sometimes feels like the visa officers pick and choose which cases they want to process fast and which ones they will take their precious time on.

I hope both of our cases finish before the end of this year.

Keep me posted on the happenings of your case kingtreek, okay. We can offer each other support.

Usually if there is no change in the application from the last email that you sent, then they will not respond. I've had the same experience.

Just recently I went and spoke to my MP about my case and they said that they will get in contact with London on my behalf from now on. So now I apparently should not get in contact with London anymore as they are dealing with the case. However, I have not heard anything back from my MP's office.

When a file is waiting for security clearances to come back, there is nothing an overseas mission can do. It's now in the hands of CSIS and they take as long as they take. I'm sorry, I know that's not what you want to hear but CIC can't do anything. Even the courts cannot do anything on this. CSIS has the power, by legislation, to take as long as it deems necessary to ensure security checks are done to their satisfaction.
