Does my American friend need a visitor visa?

Hello

I'm a Permanent Resident of Canada. I own my own home and am retired and totally self-supporting.

I would like my American boyfriend to visit and stay with me throughout the year, so that we can tour parts of Canada and enjoy what the country has to offer. His visits would possibly last up to 90 days each time and he would return to his home in the U.S. after each visit, travelling by car. At this time he has no intention of staying in Canada permanently as he is sole helper for his elderly mom. We are both in our 60s and retired.

My question is: does he need a visitor visa to make these trips to visit me? If so, does he need to apply for a multi-trip visa?

If he does not need a visa what kind of documentation should he present at the border? Will he need to show that he has out of country health insurance?
What about bank statements to prove sufficient income? Will his age (69) be a problem? His visits would total up to six months.

I have never had this situation and am not sure what to expect from CIC or CBSA.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for responding.

Does he need documentation in addition to his U.S passport?

Thank you.

In case he's asked, he should carry proof that he has sufficient funds to pay for his stay in Canada. To be safe, he should also carry some evidence of ties to the US (e.g. property ownership) in case CBSA officers become concerned he has plans to live in Canada without authorization. Lastly, make sure he doesn't pack like he's moving.
