I have seen couple of members in this forum did that ... it helps in getting the status update online though application was submit on paper.

They just ask the information you provided on your application form. You have to create an account first in mycic and then input the information . When they find that particular information based application.You will get linked.

Linking paper application to your MyCIC account definitely help. Because in this way we can get updates about status change at regular intervals. I have applied for student permit on 2nd may 2016. Yesterday have received an email that mycic account has been updated. Therefore I believe it helps.
