When filing the form you have to consent that IRCC can access your tax data. But do they actually look at your returns or just the fact if you filed or not?

When I was on work permit in Canada 4 years ago, my first tax return had some inaccuracies but I never bothered correcting it (I know I should've) and IRCC didn't care about this issue when I filed for PR; it was approved pretty quickly. But I am wondering if they re-examine your tax returns dating again when you file for citizenship?

Yes, they will take a look at all the years since you landed / became PR.

Okay. Do they also look what's inside of the tax returns or just if you have filed?
Yes, they will take a look inside of the tax returns and see if there are any discrepancies. If there have been any changes / updates, they may issue you a T1 "Matching Letter" and ask you to pay the adjusted amount you owe. Until you pay, CRA will not provide the clearance to IRCC.
