Does he need fingerprints??

I (Canadian citizen) am sponsoring my Aussie husband to immigrate to Canada.
I sent away for his police record check from Aus, but does he need fingerprints done? I've only read that they will request it if they need it, but I am not 100% ... advice please and thanks ;D
